Some days are good, and some days are great. This shoot proved to be the makings of a really great day. Several years ago, I had the privilege of shooting the newborn photos for these beautiful twin sisters. They were your classic over-achievers, and because of their rush to be born, they had the honor of spending an extended stay in the NICU. So, our “newborns” were actually about 6 weeks old by the time we had our shoot.
Today, those girls would like to introduce you to their newborn baby brother, Mr. L – and the whole family is so excited he’s here! He was enjoying the peace and quiet and decided to come a bit later than his impetuous sisters – his mother says he had to be “evicted!” And we were invited to photograph his debut.
One thing you’ll notice about this guy is his skin – it’s really perfect. We often spend a good deal of time retouching skin, smoothing over the rough patches and bringing the rainbow of baby-skin-colors back to something that looks a bit prettier. This man has perfect skin. Also, he smiles in his sleep. We love to capture a baby’s smile, and sometimes it takes a bit of effort, as babies aren’t always interested in helping us get the perfect shot. This man was. And he gave us his perfect camera smile again and again.
It was a delight to have his big sisters with us in the shoot – the girls were so good with him, sweet, patient, loving and helpful. It’s so refreshing when a newborn shoot turns into a family shoot.
L’s mom is super creative and talented, and she did all the fabrics—ottoman and drapes—in his nursery. The colors are so perfectly balanced with the creative wall decorations above his changing table. The nursery was an ideal studio for us to capture this little man’s first moments. His creative mother joined him in a few photos, which made for some truly beautiful images. It’s such an important reminder that those of us behind the camera really need to allow ourselves to be captured by cameras. When they are older, these children will treasure those photos of Mama – and so will she.
It was an honor and a privilege to spend some time with this beautiful and vibrant family. Thank you for joining us in welcoming Mr. L into the world, and onto his first blog. It’s an honor to be this family’s photographer, and a delight to meet their sweet newborn son.
